Did you know that the Mauna Loa explosion in 1859 destroyed coastal villages and fishponds at Wainanali`i and Kiholo, which are places located the west coast of the Big Island. The 1859 eruption was also the most voluminous eruption in the post-contact period and had a 32 mile lava flow which was the longest on the whole state. This eruption was one of the two historical eruptions from radial vents on the northwest and west flanks of Mauna Loa. This eruption lasted around 300 days and there were just a few earthquakes that came afterwards.
